5600 Timer models cost less initially than meter models because they regenerate on a preset schedule so they don’t have much programmability. It uses a 12-day pin configuration to manually preset the backwash schedule for a number of days. These units should be used when water use is very predictable. If you change your water usage, for example when you have guests, you may need to manually regenerate (backwash) the system. If you go away on vacation, you may want to unplug your softener so it would not regenerate unnecessarily.
